Had a Stroll at KOMTAR Walk

This morning, after an early lunch of dim sum, I walked up the stairs to KOMTAR to enjoy the view of new restaurants, moving display of pictures and photos on LED ceiling lights, took a break at Marry Brown empty seats and just absorb the colourful sights and cafeterias along both sides of the aisle. There was a huge display of durian that greeted us near the entrance. Durian is supposedly the ‘king of fruits’ in Malaysia with its pungent flavour and fragrance. It is an acquired taste; otherwise foreigners will think it smells like used socks, according to then President Obama, during his trip to Malaysia sometime back.

I was mesmerised by a colourful ‘parade’ of people in Samba-like costumes walking along the KOMTAR Walk aisle and took the opportunity to snap a photo for lifetime memory and posterity here in this blog. You cannot miss the colourful ostrich feathers of red, blue, green, yellow and the like. A Marilyn Monroe look alike and Captain Jack Sparrow of the Pirates of the Caribbean lookalike was there too as eye candy. I guess I was lucky to have this opportunity with the small group to attract tourists such as myself and friend, albeit being locals. Can you find me carrying a placard that says, “I love To The Top, KOMTAR?”

The above photo was taken at ‘Japanese Street’, fully adorned with the signature pink cherry blossoms, local to Japan and its sushi outlets selling Japanese ice-cream and of course, sushi. There was also a Rolls Royce on display at the foyer; I don’t know why it is there in the first place and it was not even offered for a lucky draw. But the model is old compared to my uncle’s Phantom in Singapore that has sleeker style and more chic.

SpeedRent – Linking up Landlords and Tenants

AN online platform, Speedrent, is available in Malaysia for landlords and tenants to deal directly with one another. “The app connects the tenant directly with the landlord. The tenant does not need to pay a deposit,” says founder Wong Whei Meng. On the website, it says “Speedrent makes home renting DIY easy!”

Traditionally, he says, tenants who rent a place for RM1,000 monthly through an agent would have to pay RM4,000 in total – a two-month security deposit, one month utility deposit (both which are refundable) – and the one-month advance rental. But with Speedrent, Wong says, the tenant pays RM2,000 upfront (RM1,000 for the first-month rent and the other RM1,000 goes to Speedrent.)

“So this is 50% less in terms of upfront cost for the tenant.” He says the landlord will also pay Speedrent the equivalent of a month’s rent. In return, the landlord will be covered by an insurance policy if the tenant bolts before the one-year tenancy is up. This, he says, is in partnership with Allianz General Insurance. “Traditionally, if your tenant runs away after six months, you get the five months that he paid, and you get to keep the three months security and utility deposits.

“But with Speedrent, if the tenant defaults on payment or goes MIA, then the landlord will get the six months’ rent. And he will get another two months rental guarantee from the insurance plus RM15,000 and RM1,000 as an inconvenience benefit. “So in total, he gets about nine to 10 months of rent.” The app generates a tenancy agreement template for both parties to sign online. This is sent to Inland Revenue Board for stamping, making it legal and binding.

Speedrent also does a credit check on the tenant so that the landlord will know whether he has a good credit score. The rent goes through Speedrent, which tracks the tenant’s payment record. If he doesn’t pay up but continue staying at the home, Speedrent will talk to him. If that fails, they will get lawyers to send out a letter of demand and an eviction notice.

“Based on our statistics, most tenants would opt to leave by the stipulated date.” And if they do not, Speedrent will give their names to CTOS to be blacklisted. “So far, we haven’t had to blacklist anyone yet,” says Wong. If the landlord is the one who is problematic where the place rented out is bad with problems such as bed bugs, Speedrent will remove his listing and ban him from their app.

Wong says Speedrent which started in 2015 matches about 50 to 60 landlords with tenants each month. High-end units move slowly but those within an affordable range rental between RM1,200 to RM1,500 get taken up fast, he adds.

Ian Leaf Switzerland

Ian Leaf Switzerland

Switzerland is a beautiful country. I remember visiting this amazing country 5 years ago in 2012. The snowcapped mountains in Mount Pilatus was awesone and breathtaking. We went up there via a cable car with a helicopter view of the Alps and pine trees right to the pit stop at the top where you can rest and relax for a drink or two and buy souvenirs home such as fridge magnets, my favourite. It is also one of the top ten richest country in the world by per capita GDP of USD 41,950.00 at number 9 position, according to Forbes report last year 2016.

My trip here was a memorable one and Switzerland was one of the 10 European countries covered during a group tour with my sisters. I have also written 10 articles on Switzerland and its culture, museums, etc for a hotel booking website. Each article is about at least 1,000 words to educate and are curated from the internet.

The Emoji Movie – 2017

Gene is an emoji that lives in Textopolis, a digital city inside the phone of his user Alex. He is the son of two meh emojis named Mel and Mary, and is able to make multiple expressions despite his parents’ upbringing. His parents are hesitant of him going to work, but Gene insists so that he can feel useful. Upon receiving a text from his crush Addie, Alex decides to send her an emoji. When Gene is selected, he panics, makes a confusing expression, and wrecks the text center. Gene is called in by Smiler, a smiley emoji and leader of the text center, who concludes that Gene is a “malfunction” and therefore must be deleted. Gene is chased by bots, but is rescued by Hi-5, a once popular emoji who has since lost his fame due to lack of use. He tells Gene that he can be fixed if they find a hacker, and Hi-5 accompanies him so that he can reclaim his fame.

Smiler sends more bots to look for Gene when she finds out that he has left Textopolis, as his actions have caused Alex to think that his phone needs to be fixed. Gene and Hi-5 come to a piracy app where they meet the hacker emoji Jailbreak, who wants to reach Dropbox so that she can live in the cloud. The trio is attacked by Smiler’s bots, but manage to escape into the game Candy Crush. Jailbreak reveals that Gene can be fixed in the cloud, and the group goes off into the Just Dance app. While there, Jailbreak is revealed to be a princess emoji, named Linda, who fled home too after tiring of being stereotyped. They are once again attacked by bots, and their actions cause Alex to delete the Just Dance app. Gene and Jailbreak escape, but Hi-5 is taken along with the app and ends up in the trash.

Mel and Mary go searching for Gene and have a very lethargic argument. They make up in the Instagram app when Mel reveals that he, too, is a malfunction, explaining Gene’s behavior. While traveling through Spotify, Jailbreak admits that she likes Gene just the way he is, and that he should not be ashamed of his malfunction. They make it to the trash and rescue Hi-5, but are soon attacked by an upgraded bot. They evade it and enter Dropbox, where they encounter a firewall. The gang get past it with a password being Addie’s name and make it to the cloud, where Jailbreak prepares to reprogram Gene. Gene admits his feelings for Jailbreak, but she wishes to stick to her plan of venturing into the cloud, unintentionally causing Gene to revert to his apathetic programming out of heartbreak. The upgraded bot takes Gene, and Hi-5 and Jailbreak race after them.

As Smiler prepares to delete Gene, Mel and Mary arrive and are also threatened. Jailbreak and Hi-5 arrive and disable the bot, which falls on top of Smiler. Alex has since taken his phone to the store and asks to have his phone erased to fix the problem. Out of desperation, Gene prepares to have himself texted to Addie, making numerous faces to express himself. Realizing that Addie received a text from him, Alex stops his phone from getting erased, saving the emoji and finally getting to speak with Addie. Gene accepts himself for who he is and is celebrated by all of the emojis.

In a mid-credits scene, Smiler is seen wearing numerous braces due to her teeth being cracked by the bot, playing and losing a game of Go Fish in the “loser lounge” with the other forgotten and unused emotions, implying that she was demoted for her crimes.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature

Surly is now loved by the park community and currently overseeing an all-you-can-eat buffet at the condemned nut shop. This worries Andie, as she prefers a more hard-working outlook on life. Despite Surly’s reassurances all is well, the nut shop is accidentally blown up by Mole when he neglects to cut down pressure from the boiler in the nut shop. Andie takes the opportunity to try and get the animals back to their roots by foraging for food in Liberty Park while Surly and Buddy try to find other food-packed places, but fail each time. Defeated, he and Buddy decide to go back to the park.

Meanwhile, Mayor Percival J. Muldoon relishes in his wealth that comes from profit-making locations across his city. However, he notices Liberty Park never makes money, so he decides to turn it into Liberty Land to pocket more cash. During a press conference, Surly and Andie discovers Mayor Muldoon’s plot and Surly convinces the animals to fight back, which they do successfully and they manage to sabotage the construction worker’s efforts to tear down the park. However, Surly’s enjoyment is short-lived when Andie attempts to convince the animals to work hard for food as he believes it can result in disappointment. When the foreman of the construction workers tells the Mayor about the animal attacks, Muldoon calls an extermination squad led by Gunther to get rid of the animals.

Surly gets caught in one of Gunther’s traps when looking for food and the animals are pursued by Frankie where he falls in love with Precious as she is suddenly abducted by Heather Muldoon. Surly and Buddy head out to rescue her while Andie and the Bruisers find a new park when Liberty Park is eventually overtaken. While searching for Muldoon’s car, Surly and Buddy run afowl with a colony of territorial white mice led by Mr. Feng. They manage to evade the mice and find Mayor Muldoon’s mansion where they save Precious in Heather’s room. In the process, Precious tells Frankie she is not interested in him, breaking his heart. However, Heather finds the animals and alerts her dad. Surly’s recklessness causes Mayor Muldoon to injure Buddy. Meanwhile, Andie and the Bruisers find what seems to be a suitable park, but it turns out to be a golf course.

Surly returns with Precious and an unconscious Buddy, reuniting with the others down in a hole near the construction of the theme park. While mourning for Buddy, Surly recounts the day he and Buddy met when they were kids. At the animals’ urging, Surly leads them to take back the park from Mayor Muldoon and his followers during the exclusive opening of Liberty Land. After crashing the opening, Mayor Muldoon calls Gunther and his team over to capture them and Surly is the only one left standing, so he goes to Mr. Feng and his army. While attacking Surly, the latter convinces Feng and the animals must work together regardless of whether they are from the city or a park and this causes Feng to spare him and agree to help.

After busting his friends out of one of Gunther’s vehicles, Surly rounds up all the animals to take back Liberty Park and they manage to overwhelm the humans. Precious finds Frankie and apologizes to him for what happened earlier. After slowing earning his forgiveness back, Heather tries to get Gunther to tranquilize them, but shoots Heather instead of knocking her out. Mayor Muldoon tries to escape the chaos using a hot air balloon, but Surly and Buddy commandeer a roller coaster to catch up to him. Surly makes it on top of the balloon and he and Mayor Muldoon have a long, intense battle that ends with Surly causing him to fall on a bouncy house. Mayor Muldoon, Heather, and Gunther are arrested by the police and Liberty Land is shut down.

Several months later, people help rebuild Liberty Park to its former glory. After the park is rebuilt, Mr. Feng and his colony decide to stay in the park, Precious and Frankie have puppies and Surly takes Andie on a ride with Precious with him to rob a nut cart.

In the post credits scene, it is revealed that Raccoon is still alive and he is swimming back home with sharks perusing him.

FIGHT FROM VICTORY, NOT FOR VICTORY

God does not need you to defeat the devil today. Jesus has already done it and given you the victory. (Colossians 2:15, Romans 8:37) Your part is to enforce the victory by simply standing your ground, which is victory ground. In other words, you “fight” from victory ground by standing. You don’t fight for victory.

In Ephesians 6:10–18, the passage on spiritual warfare, the word “wrestle” appears only once (verse 12), while the word “stand” appears four times—“stand against the wiles of the devil”, “withstand in the evil day”, “having done all, to stand”, “Stand therefore”. (Verses 11, 13–14) Four times the Holy Spirit tells us to stand. Yet, many Christians are focusing on wrestling their way to victory!

My friend, you are already on victory ground. You already have everything in Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:21, 23) You are already blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3). The devil knows this. And that is why his tactic is to deceive you and make you think that you don’t have the victory.

So when he attacks you by saying, “Look at that small sum in your bank account! How are you going to pay the bills?” stand your ground. Declare, “I am not trying to be rich. I am already blessed in Christ!” It doesn’t matter how much you have in the bank. You are richly supplied because you are in Christ. And as the need arises, the supply will be there if you believe it.

It is the same with healing. The devil will try to attack you with symptoms in your body. He will try to put pain in your body, and make you feel weak here and there, so that you think that you are still sick. He is trying to make you believe that you don’t have your healing. That is the time to be conscious of Jesus’ finished work and declare, “I am not trying to get healed, I am healed! I am standing on the victory ground which Jesus has given me!”

Beloved, it makes a world of difference when you fight from victory and not for victory!
