Remember the Cross

Remember the cross

…“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
Hebrews 10:17

REMEMBER THE CROSS

I don’t know about you, but I would say that Hebrews 10:17 is good news. God sees all our sins—past, present and future—and says, “Your sins I remember no more!” The words “no more” are a strong double negative in the original Greek text. In other words, God is saying, “Your sins I will by no means ever remember!”

Has God lowered His standards? No, He is still perfectly holy. He did remember all our sins—2,000 years ago at the cross. Every sin which we have committed or will commit has been punished to the full in the body of Jesus Christ at the cross. That is why today, God remembers our sins no more. We should, therefore, not be sin-conscious.

Each time we feel condemned for our past mistakes, God wants us to remember the cross and say, “Lord Jesus, you were sentenced for this sin I committed. You bore the judgment, so God will not judge me for this sin. You were condemned for this sin, so God will not condemn me for it.”

If you don’t look to the cross, you will become sin-conscious and you will walk around with a certain expectation of judgment. And that expectation of judgment will give the devil a chance to get you thinking that God has something against you because of your sin.

You must come to the place where you know and believe that all your sins are forgiven, and that you are saved eternally.

Hebrews 10:12, 14 says, “But this Man [Jesus], after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God…For by one offering He has perfected forever…”

You and I are perfected forever because of Jesus’ perfect work on the cross. We are perfected by God’s full acceptance and perfect delight in His Son’s work that has so glorified His holiness. Beloved, hear God say to you, “I will be merciful. Your sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Rules for Capitalization in Titles of Articles

If you have a look at the title of this article you will see that some letters are capitalized and some are not. Although the capitalization of titles can sometimes depend on the particular style of a writer, institution or publication, there are some general rules to keep in mind.

Style Guides

The rules for capitalizing titles not only of articles, but also books, papers, speeches, etc, can vary according to a particular style guide, such as Associated Press Stylebook (AP), Chicago Manual of Style, and MLA style. This is known as title case. While you will find similarities between each guide, it’s important to pay attention to their differences.

Style guide similarities:

  • In all three styles, always capitalize the first and last word of any title.
    • How to Land Your Dream Job
  • In all three styles, capitalize nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
    • Visiting Beautiful Ruins (noun)
    • As She Ran Away (pronoun)
    • The Importance of Learning Fast (verb)
    • The Poky Little Puppy (adjective)
    • She Quietly Waits (adverb)
  • In all three styles, do not capitalize articles, prepositions, or coordinating conjunctions.
    • To Catch a Thief (article)
    • One Year in Paris (preposition)
    • Magic and Daybreak (coordinating conjunction)

Style guide differences:

  • In the AP Stylebook, all words with three letters or less are lowercased. However, if any of those words are verbs (is, are, was, be), they are to be capitalized.
  • In the Chicago Manual of Style, all prepositions are lowercased, even the lengthier ones (between, among, throughout).
  • In MLA style, words with three letters or less are always lowercased.

So, which one should you choose? Well, it all depends if a certain style is required by your teacher, course, or subject/field. For example, MLA style is commonly used in the liberal arts or humanities. AP style is popularly used in journalism, Chicago is often used in business. A suggestion is to choose one style, or check to see what style is required by your teacher or editor, and stick to it.

The General Rules for Title Case

As we can see, there are some exceptions to the general rules for title case set forth by each style guide, but they mostly follow a similar pattern. We know to capitalize the first, last, and important words in a title. Important words include nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, and more. So, generally, these parts of speech are capitalized in titles:

“Short” words, those with less than five letters, are lowercase in titles, unless they are the first or last words. Generally, we do not capitalize:

  • Articles – a, an, the
  • Coordinating Conjunctions (fewer than five letters) – and, but, or, for, nor, etc.
  • Prepositions (fewer than five letters) – on, at, to, from, by, etc.

When in doubt and you do not have a reference guide in front of you, here is one general rule recommended by The U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual:

“Capitalize all words in titles of publications and documents, except a, an, the, at, by, for, in, of, on, to, up, and, as, but, or, and nor.”

What About Sentence Case?

Now that we know some of the ins and outs of title case, let’s take a look at sentence case. In sentence case, the title is written as if it is a sentence. This is considered a more casual style and is commonly used in newspapers and on the web.

Only the first word has a capital letter:

  • Budget wedding invitations
  • Best technology blogs

However, proper nouns within the title are also capitalized:

  • Top 10 things to do in Paris
  • Hiking at the Grand Canyon

Whether you’re writing in title case or sentence case, every style guide is just a little bit different. You might discover that some publications are moving toward sentence case. There are a couple reasons why writers choose this over title case.

First, one could argue that capitalized words slow down a reader’s ability to scan. A title written in sentence case could be perceived as having an uninterrupted flow. Next, some publications prefer this style simply because it’s more likely to preserve consistency. With sentence case, there’s no nitpicking over the capitalization of a three-letter preposition.

You might notice an overall trend toward this style. Many heavy hitters in the publishing industry use sentence case, including The Boston Globe, LA Times, and USA Today. However, if you pick up a copy of The New York Times, you’ll see they stick with Title Case.

Advanced Rules to Note

One of the beautiful complexities of the English language is that, for every rule you learn, there’s probably an exception. Here are some advanced rules for title capitalization:

Hyphenated Titles

Let’s take a look at the Chicago Manual of Style’s guidelines:

  • Capitalize the first element.
  • Capitalize subsequent elements unless they are articles, prepositions, or coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, or, nor).
    • High-Quality Web Services
    • First-Rate U.S. Lawyers
    • Bed-and-Breakfast Options in Savannah
  • Capitalize the second element in a hyphenated spelled-out number.
    • Forty-Ninth Street Blues
  • Do not capitalize the second element if the first element is a prefix that could not stand alone by itself (anti or pre).
    • Anti-inflammatory Dieting

Open Compounds

An open compound comes to life when a modifying adjective is used in conjunction with a noun. This creates a new noun. Hopefully warning bells will signal in your mind, as nouns are almost always capitalized.

  • Salad Dressing Recipes
  • The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year

The First Word Following a Colon

Let’s take a look at both the Chicago and AP Style guidelines:

  • Capitalize the first word after a colon.
    • Feminine Poetry: Ten Women Writers from Around the World
  • Capitalize the first word after a colon if it begins an independent clause.
    • I know who you are: You are my friend
  • Do not capitalize the first word after a colon if the clause cannot stand alone.
    • I know who you are: nobody

Prepositions That Belong to a Phrasal Verb

Prepositions often find themselves on the ‘do not capitalize’ list. However, when a preposition becomes an important part of a phrasal verb, it does need to be capitalized.

  • How to Back Up a Computer
  • Turn Down the Heat to Save You Money

Following the Rules

If you are debating how to capitalize titles in research papers and articles, your professor or editor will most likely delegate a certain style. In that case, make sure you visit the handbook on that style guide’s website. There will be ample guidance and examples. Aside from that, there are a wealth of other resources and handy tools out there. As you craft your titles, pay careful attention not only to the type of word, but also the length and placement of each word.

Furthermore, no matter your personal preference, make sure you write the exact titles of books, newspapers, journals, etc. as they are written on the original document (even if they do not follow common capitalization rules).

Couples Counseling Retreats

Becoming an adult, we learn how to connect with buddies, family people, and colleagues but rarely will we nowadays have appropriate heroines to understand ‘healthy intimate relating’ from. In couples, therapy partners can learn why is a relationship satisfying where they can enhance their own. For more information on couples counseling retreats, visit our website.

Feeling more comfortable with your counselor

It is crucial that you like a couple understand your counselor, whether it’s a lady, a guy or perhaps a ‘therapy couple’. Provide your counselor a couple of sessions to feel whether there’s a great fit between you, your lover and exactly how the counselor works together with you.

What to anticipate

In couples therapy counsellors, coaches and therapists typically follow different theories. How much is your counselor asks regarding your relationship history to know the way you joined together like a couple and just what your challenges happen to be on the way. They’ll also bring your personal history including some information regarding your loved ones of origin to determine whether you will find patterns inside your genealogy which are repeating themselves.

Individual sessions – couples session

Personally, I’ve discovered that a combination of couples and individual sessions is most effective. In most couples issues you will find potentially hidden personal challenges which are triggered through the partner. These personal issues show up being an invitation to become worked with also it sometimes is much better for that individual to exercise them in their own space and time.

In couples session, I’ve discovered that couples learn how to better pay attention to their partner when they’re requested to pay attention first after which speak, instead of to react immediately. This structure frequently enables them to so that you can fully go to town inside the safe atmosphere from the therapy and on the other hand to positively listen with persistence and reactivity low.

Make use of your counselor wisely

As a couples counselor, I would recommend to my clients that they would like to use time wisely. They don’t need to enter into therapy to pay for me to look at them have a similar fight because they have in your own home. This time around is much better accustomed to consider the actual reasons and mechanism that cause the fighting. Refer to my other article ‘Couples Therapy – It May Save Your Valuable Relationship!’ to learn more. Want to know more about a weekend marriage retreat? Visit our website today for more information.

Request specialist help

If you’ve been wondering if couples therapy is perfect for after this you try it out. When feelings run, high reactivity is nearly inevitable. Sometimes all of your efforts may not be enough to alter the patterns you and your spouse have become yourself into. If you haven’t yet found the courage to inquire about help, it’s time to do it.

5 Tips to Keep Your Chin Up

5 tips to keep your chin up

Don’t you find the infographic above colorful and attractive? Well, as it is self-explanatory, I shall not delve deeper into the contents. The titles are as below:

1. Do something impulsive
2. Have rituals
3. Exercise at least 10 minutes a day
4. Take Breaks – add some novelties in your daily routine.
5. Learn something new – this is so pertinent now especially in the new technology age where it keeps changing and newer programs and apps come out very fast.

If you don’t change, you will be left behind and need to keep up with the new in-thing. People progress because they are able to innovate or learn new kinds of stuff and features of applications daily. I also need to remind myself not to be too complacent or lazy; because it is human nature to take things easy.

A nugget of wisdom from Instagram that I recall is this: Don’t sleep like you are rich, but work like you are broke! And follow the example of the ant – always hunting for food and store it up during summer for winter. Else the grasshopper that sings all day will go hungry during winter.

For more details, just read through the infographic above that is carefully curated for your reading pleasure.

Count on God’s Forgiveness

Count on God's Forgiveness

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore…
Matthew 28:18–19

JESUS’ AUTHORITY HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US

When God created man, He gave man authority to have dominion over everything on earth (see Genesis 1:26). But when man sinned, he gave this authority to Satan. And when man’s authority was transferred to Satan, Satan brought in diseases, poverty, strife, bitterness, pain, loss and death. He messed up everything on earth for man.

“Pastor Prince, why didn’t God just grab the devil by the neck and throw him out of the garden?” God did not do that because He is a judicial God. It was a man who gave away his authority to Satan. So it had to be a man who would legally take it back. And God has done this through a Man. His name is Jesus!

By His death on the cross, Jesus righteously restored all that man had lost. That is why, just before He went back to heaven, He said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore…” Those words tell us that He has transferred His authority to us. The same authority that He had over the storm, evil spirits, sicknesses, diseases, and even death is now ours to use.

So when there are reports of a flu epidemic and of young children falling sick in the media, know that you have dominion over the epidemic. Declare, “By the authority given to me in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this flu virus will not come near my children. I plead the blood of Jesus over them.”

If you have been told that your family has a history of heart disease, take dominion and declare, “By the authority given to me in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I destroy every form, manifestation and hereditary cause of this disease. By His blood, my family has been redeemed from this and every other curse.”

My friend, the authority which has been restored to us is not just the authority on earth which man had before the fall, but Jesus’ unquestionable and complete authority in heaven and on earth!

Christmas Greetings 2018

Beautiful design christmas tree, xmas celebration

This year, Christmas is nostalgic for me. It is not really merry in that sense as dad has gone to be with the Lord on 17th December 2018, on a Monday morning at 5:00 am. We had mass and his wake for 5 days before his funeral on a Friday where many of his church parishioners came to pay their last respects in The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, where dad served as a photographer and lector for many years. His church friends came to sing the Marion songs during his wake, requesting for my dad, the late Albert Tan Cheng Ban, to be with Mother Mary and Jesus.

Dad is now in a better place, but I will miss his jokes and gregarious character. Many described dad as a gentle soul, ever ready to lend a helping hand and words of encouragement. When you meet him, you will feel happy and he has a tendency to please people. Our neighbors, friends, and relatives came from the UK, KL, and Singapore to attend dad’s funeral. Well, he is no longer suffering now in a nursing home, but gone to be with the Lord with a mansion in heaven where Jesus has prepared a place for him.

Anyway, Season’s greetings to you all!
