Common Non-Verbal Job Interview Mistakes for Women

Above is an infographic from savvy.com on common mistakes made during job interviews for men and women in particular. The picture speaks for itself. In a survey of more than 2,000 hiring managers, 33% claim to know whether or not they would hire someone within 90 seconds. Statistics show that first impressions are determined by 55% – the way you dress, act and walk through the door. 38% – the quality of your confidence and grammar. 7% – the words you choose to say.

The things that have an impact on first impressions: 70% of employers claim they don’t want applicants to be overly fashionable or trendy. 65% of hiring managers say clothes can be the deciding factor between 2 similar candidates. And don’t wear jewelery to give a hint that you are wealthy. Be prudent in your dressing.

About 1/3 have a bad posture and fidget too much. 26% have a weak handshake. 26% play with their hair or touch their face. 9% use too many hand gestures.

Anyway, back to the infographic, one of the common non-verbal mistakes make during job interview is failing to make eye contact and knowing little about the company. Some cross their arms over their chest and don’t smile. Hence, for newbies and fresh grads, look out for these little mistakes before it is too late.

Dad in Hospital

I was in KL a few days ago when dad gave me a missed call at 5:50am. He was admitted to the General Hospital for pain and they suspected it was dengue. They took his blood and it came out negative. Then the doctors did a series of further tests and today he is supposed to go for a heart scan since he has 3 calsified clogged arteries in the heart. I decided to order a flower basket online and deliver on the same day. After searching, I found Bloom This but the payment cannot go through which is a miss opportunity for them. After further search, I found Flower Chimp and the range of flower arrangement looks pretty attractive drawing my attention. Since it is based in KL, I chose Penang option for fast delivery there, as they could have a branch or florist in Penang. Before 12:00 noon, it was paid online for $190 and delivered at 4:00pm the same day on Saturday, a weekend.

Above is the fruit basket with flowers of 10 roses and 10 daisies, etc that has a dragon fruit, some pears, oranges, apples, grapes, kiwi fruits, etc.

About 7-8 doctors attended to dad and 2 specialists who are church friends also came to see dad. He qualified for first class, but chose 3rd class instead so that he can talk and mingle with other patients and chat about their children, etc. My dad is a very sociable person and does not like to be alone. Just hope he will be discharged soon. He is already 80 this year.

Thank you, Manis!

Thank you Manis for rewarding me with extra 1,000 points. This is the second time they voluntarily gave me the points, totalling 2,000. Above is a snapshot of my iPhone 6 of the Manis App showing the over 9,000 points. For those of you who have not used this app, it is worth trying as it allows you to key in your merchant name, key in the amount spent, snap the receipt showing the tax invoice number, date and amount and finally upload it within 24 hours of purchase.

Above is another snapshot of my redemption history showing that I have received the Body Shop online $10 voucher with code for purchase, MPH bookstore redemption, Marks & Spenser and Papa Delivery Cheesecake redemption. Do note, however, that the online voucher is around $10 or $20 and you have to top up the rest for the full redemption, depending on what you buy.

My latest redemption a few days ago was a Health Lane pharmacy free velvet pouch for 2,500 points and provided you spend at least $50 at the pharmacy in Kuala Lumpur. That is the advantage of doing business in KL as we go there often for work and just downstairs my apartment in KL is the Health Lane pharmacy of which I am a member.

My 2-Month Old Pomeranian

Yesterday, my partner bought me a 2-month old Pomeranian female puppy named Leia. The puppy was dewormed and vacinated. Amongst all the poodles and other dogs, it was the most subdued and quiet. So, I chose her and bought the cage, water dispenser, cushion, vitamins, dog food, leash, etc for a total of $2,100. Should we go to KL for business, then I will put her in a pet hotel – all fuss free for the grandparents. 🙂 So far it refused to stay inside its cage and keeps barking incessantly until we let it out. It is still young, and perhaps we might send it for dog training at Straits Quay, when it is much older so that it does not anyhow pee and poo all over the floor instead of inside its cage.

Despite the inconveniences, it has brought me joy and those who keep pets are known to live longer, according to Astro pet channel. It is like a furry ball bouncing about and skipping all over the condo. The only place it is not allowed to go is the master bedroom, which has my carpet, and many things on the floor, especially reading materials.

The leash has a bell, so I know where it walks around in the unit like a curious puppy. It asks for lots of attention, but sometimes we have to ignore it to work and for me, to moonlight part time. Afterall, it needs moolah to eat and to groom it.

Article Writer

I am also an article writer for 2 sites in Singapore that pays via my Paypal. The curated articles require lots of time with a minimum of 1,000 words plus free pictures from Instagram. Yesterday morning, took an Air Asia flight in KLIA2 to JB and went to 3 places before returning on the same day by Firefly to Subang Airport. I booked a Grab car and a driver was found rather quickly when I touched down. He was already waiting for us outside McDonald’s where I noticed a few police officers around in case the normal cab drivers want to bash up the Grab driver for taking a slice of the pie.

Now technology rules and without using smartphones to find customers on the go and get directions to their destinations, it would be getting more difficult for conventional taxi driver to find a living. Eventually their jobs will be replaced by Uber and Grab drivers who are very efficient and don’t charge too exorbitantly.

This morning, I receive a feeback from my editor requiring further editions to my article on Top 10 Best Places to Eat in Penang. It is a curated article, meaning research needs to be done online.

Also noticed that there are so many Mainland China labourers in JB taking flights home to KL while working in construction sites as they spoke extra loudly and were crude. China had already stopped capital outflow from its country and I don’t know how this will affect the development in southern Johor.

NAWEM – Inspire Women in Business

I was browsing around when I found this website that inspires women in business – NAWEM. You can visit their site at https://www.nawem.org.my/. They have organised several workshops and seminars for business women. Just the other day, I was reading the Straits Times and the government had helped a woman bumi earning from barely $1k per month to making $1 million in revenue every month simply selling babies’ diapers and exporting to Indonesia, Philippines, etc. Even her trip and hotel stay at the first attempt were all paid for! So easy peasy for bumis to get started and connected with the right channels, if only they are willing to work hard and put in effort.

The learning curve is cut short very much unlike for others who have to slought it out themselves. We may not even have the financial means to do so and even have to learn from trial and error. As it is, I have a booking site that is still not ready even after 2 years of hosting and it has not brought in any business. If only I have a mentor to guide me through how to strike it out on my own on a part time basis, as I have a full time job at home, I would gladly grab the opportunity.

Stayed at Mid Valley Cititel Hotel

I just came back from KL 2 days ago and we stayed at Mid Valley Cititel Hotel for 1 night. We were on our way back to Penang when there was a call for an interview on Monday at the last minute. Hence, we had to stay back for a total of 4 days and 3 nights in KL. I also redeemed my Manis H&M voucher for $30 at 20% discount with a minimum spend of $150. After coming back in the evening, the following day, went to Alor Setar to meet up with someone which we may not accept due to the stringent rules of completion.

I also signed up for UOB credit card and got a sign up gift of Hello Kitty selfie stick, power bank, USB light, key ring and wire. The box of 5 pieces cost $70 online or rather $69 that I got for free just for signing up at Mid Valley. Always sign up with young people, they will give you the sign up gift; never with old people who might even keep the gifts for themselves and tell you there is no sign up gift! Utter balloney.

I am now in the midst of updating the work and profile and it requires some time to complete. My boss had gone out on site project and won’t be back until later. Also just received a parcel of Pastor Joseph Prince’ message CDs of 4 in a set that is long overdue by the postman.
