Malaysian Jun Hoong bags gold at World Aquatics Championships

PETALING JAYA: National diver Cheong Jun Hoong (pic) claimed a truly stunning win in the women’s 10m platform individual final at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Jun Hoong became the nation’s first ever diving world champion after chalking 397.50 points to come out tops in a starry final field of 12 participants on Wednesday evening.

Jun Hoong, a surprise entry for the individual platform, was ranked fourth after the first two dives but moved to the top spot and never looked back after that.

It was an unexpected comeback for Jun Hoong considering she was the seventh ranked diver in the final based on the results from the semi-finals stage.

Victory was certainly sweet for the 28-year-old from Perak, who had partnered Pandelela Rinong to take bronze in the women’s 10m platform synchro on Sunday.

Not only did she win Malaysia’s first-ever diving gold medal at the world championships but Jun Hoong beat two top Chinese divers — Si Yajie and Ren Qian.

Si Yajie, the world champion in 2013 and the Rio Olympics silver medallist, settled for silver with 396.00 points.

Ren Qian, the reigning Olympic champion, got the bronze with 391.95 points.

Defending champion Kim Kuk-hyang was sixth with 360.00 points.

Pandelela, who got bronze in the event at the previous edition in Kazan, Russia two years ago, managed ninth place (322.40).

Writing Articles for a Travel Website

My more than 1000-word article got acccepted for a travel website and 2 more needs revision with a fourth one on the way plus 6 more to be submitted as drafts. I am also very preoccupied with my full time job, but the good thing is that I work at home; hence I am able to take power naps in between work. I work best when I am alone undisturbed, just to earn a little extra for my retirement.

Yesterday, dad took me to sign a will of 2 copies – an original and a duplicate to bequeath my assets to my sisters and also Little Sisters’ of the Poor Old Folks Home. I used my dad’s lawyer who happens to be his church friend of the same moniker with an office at Green Hall, a few doors away from the high court. Finding a parking space is difficult, hence most law firms are set up here so that lawyers can just walk to the high court for litigation work, etc.

Today is “all souls day of the dead” or ‘cheng beng’ where the living honour the dead. My partner will attend with his siblings, leaving me some free time to myself and I can update the articles by today. Frankly speaking, the bed is still too tempting and I wish to take naps and turn on the air-con and sleep under my silk duvet. But too much sleeping will lead to poverty and one is told to work hard with one’s mind and hands.

Even if I can afford to retire now, I will still continue working to keep my mind active. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop and the devil is ‘Alzheimer’s disease’. Hence I buy books and read newspapers plus magazines to read to keep my mind active and to prolong my life. This is a fallen world, since’s Adam’s sin with sickness, disease, pestilences, wars, etc.

“Why Manis”?

“Manis” in Malay means sweet. It could be in character or flavour. Developed by Ebizu Sdn. Bhd, there is a new Manis App that you can download to snap your receipts and earn points. With sufficient points, you can then redeem for vouchers like Tesco, Giant, MPH, Lazada and much more! Instead of throwing away your shopping receipts, why not keep them to take a photo via the Manis App. There are explanations on the steps to snap, enter shop name and location if not found, enter date, amount spend and SNAP it! With grey circles at corners of the snapped receipt, you can adjust and crop for best view before uploading the photo.

Just make sure that the receipt has a store name, location, date and total amount spent. You can even fold the receipts if they are too long and just show one or two of the items bought so that the photos fits into the smartphone for clarity.

Hence, now it pays to keep your shopping or dining receipts and remember that you have to snap it within 24 hours, otherwise it will become invalid and will be rejected. So, don’t throw them away and keep snapping until you hit your targetted points to redeem for vouchers. I have already gotten my RM 10 MPH voucher since I love to buy books and read them in my free time. In Penang, I patronise Gurney Plaza once in a while and will visit MPH for the latest books on finances and self help material. The RM 10 MPH voucher that I got for hitting 3250 points was redeemed earlier and there is an online help chat to query them on any issues or problems. They will reply within 3 days or earlier.

Above is the list of vouchers that you can redeem including McDonalds that I did not mention earlier. Yes, there are many vouchers to suit your taste and likes. Since I love reading, I chose MPH voucher instead to get a discount of RM 10 should I buy a new book to upgrade myself.

After accumulating up to 6000+ points in 2 months, I redeemed my MPH voucher for slightly over 3000 points and the total points are now halfed and deducted. Each RM 1 = 1 point. Normally I myself don’t spend so much, which is RM 6,000+ in 2 months!. These are shared receipts with my partner and note that petrol receipts are also accepted, which helps to increase the points quite a lot. We also buy rather a lot of vitamins and supplements which helps the points to increase a lot whenever they are accepted.

Certain receipts are NOT accepted such as hand written receipts, hotel receipts, travel receipts, just to name a few. Just check their terms and conditions and you will find out more information. If you refer friends, you will get 500 points too.

Above is the Manis app that you can download from the App store on your smartphone.

Oprah Winfrey on Career and Life

Wikipedia states Oprah Winfrey as below:

Oprah Gail Winfrey (born Orpah Gail Winfrey; January 29, 1954) is an American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist. She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest-rated television program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. Dubbed the “Queen of All Media”, she has been ranked the richest African-American, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and is currently North America’s first and only multi-billionaire black person. Several assessments rank her as the most influential woman in the world. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama and honorary doctorate degrees from Duke and Harvard.

In the video, Oprah shared a pertinent issue, and this is to follow your instincts on what you do not want to do and follow your heart and do something you like. She is admired by the world especially women for being so successful and also as a philanthropist. It is very rare for a black woman to rise up so fast and become a mega success over time from her talk shows.

This is no longer about me nor how to earn and my travels. But it is a breather of change from all the usual stuffs like work and so on. Oprah has also been very generous to her staff of dozens of people, bringing them on cruise ship holidays to Australia and even gave a key to a brand new BMW to all her spectators. Such is her kindness and it is not surprising, she gets back what she gives.

On a more sombre mode, here is what Wikipedia wrote about her difficult life:

Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. She has stated that she was molested during her childhood and early teens and became pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy. Sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime talk show arena, and after boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place, she launched her own production company and became internationally syndicated.

Many successful people today were born into poverty which gives them the drive to succeed and work hard as reported in the local press some time back. Whereas, rich people tend to take things for granted and live the easy, lazy life, since everything is provided for and there is nothing to strive for or goals to achieve. They live like bosses and some of them which is a distant worker that I know of, cannot even work for others because he’s just like the mother; they have the boss mindset, very quarellsome and cannot work under other people. It is just a matter of time before he gets sacked again and again. He is just unemployable.

Happy New Year of the Rooster 2017

It may be a little late, but better late than never. Hence I would like to wish you Happy Chinese New Year of the Fire Rooster 2017 which happened to fall on 28th and 29th January this year. I got Singapore dollars of $200 from a relative without even going there as mum request the ang pow for me. So this is extra RM 619.40 bonus for the month of January as part of my own earnings. To me something is better than nothing. So, mum kept her promise of asking for the red packet for spinsters like me. Even though I am in a relationship, I don’t intend to get married and enjoy the status quo with much travelling with my spouse and business partner. A real life event: a woman had to have both her legs amputated at the thighs after giving birth due to infection setting in, went into a coma for a long time and woke up to find that her husband had left her. She is now disabled but became an entreprenuer, working from her wheelchair in order to support herself. Some couples don’t understand the vow, “in good times and in bad times, we shall be together.”

When something goes wrong like in this case, the housewife becomes permanently disabled, the hubby chickened out of the marriage and ran off.
